General Summary:

Conducts oral examinations, serves as a preventative care specialist and provides educational, clinical and therapeutic services supporting total health through the promotion of optimal oral health. Provides treatment that helps to prevent oral diseases such as dental caries and periodontal disease.

Position Responsibilities:

• Reviews charts, updates medical histories, and contacts physicians’ offices with the permission of the patient and dentist for information regarding the patients health.

• Provides services according to guidelines set by the dentist and any instructions from the patient’s personal physician. Records treatment performed and treatment plan prescribed by the dentist after patient visit.

• Examines the mouth to conduct initial soft tissue examination, including oral cancer screening, to identify dental problems such as periodontal disease or tooth decay. Exposes and process dental x-rays and alerts the dentist to observations.

• Performs oral prophylaxis on patients scaling and polishing the teeth to remove stains, plaque, and calculus from tooth surfaces. Applies cavity prevention agents such as fluorides and pit and fissure sealants.

• Maintains accurate medical/dental records and documentation on each patient’s chart.

• Educates patients on proper diet, proper brushing and flossing technique, and the use of special home care instruments such as dentures, flossing threaders, and inter-dental brushes. Demonstrates and explains the proper care of dentures and bridges and explains the causes of dental cavities and gum disease and its prevention. Clarifies health questions and summarizes the dental findings of the exam and explains the needed treatment.

• Practices and maintains proper infectious disease control procedures, including preparation, cleaning and disinfection of treatment room before and after each patient, cleaning and sterilization of dental instruments and disinfection of dental equipment.

• Maintains dental instruments and equipment in proper working order. Monitors and maintains supply inventory.

• As necessary, assists the Dental Assistant by seating patients, cleaning packaging, and sterilizing instruments, setting up trays for dental procedures, screening emergency patients, removing sutures, taking impressions, making models, and chair side assisting.

• Attends continuing education programs as required to maintain license to practice as a dental hygienist.

Requirements:
• One year of experience as a Dental Hygienist, with experience in pediatric patient management.

• Possession of an Associate’s Degree in Dental Hygiene from a school accredited by the American Dental Association.

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Dentist and the Office Manager, perform a variety of Hygiene functions and ensure the continuity of patient flow. • Update medical history and screen for potential problems every six months, or after a three year absence.

• Explain procedures to be performed with patient answer questions and help patients feel comfortable before, during and after dental treatment.

• Counsel patient for case acceptance

• Evaluates gingival and all oral tissue health.

• Myofunctional evaluation

• Take impression for night guards

• Make impressions for study casts.

• Administer local anesthetic agents.

• Perform teeth whitening; take impression for touch-up kit and follow-up with patients 10 days after completion of touch-up.

• Pour and trim study models when necessary

• Assist the doctor by passing instruments, aspirating intr-oral fluids, mixing materials and medicaments when necessary.

Patient Education

• Explain disease process and the role of bacteria in caries and periodontal health

• Provide appropriate educational literature

• Provide instruction on home care

• Recommend intra-oral aids

• Evaluate booklets for patient distribution

• Explain prevention to patients

• Reflect and reinforce the doctors philosophy

Daily Maintenance:

• Prepare hygiene treatment rooms in advance for each patient based on the treatment scheduled.

• Decontaminate hygiene treatment rooms and sterilize all instruments after each patient appointment.

• Maintain cleanliness of hygiene treatment rooms, lab and sterilizing area.

• Clean and flush vacuum traps.

• Restock hygiene treatment rooms and other clinical support area.

• Sharpen instruments.

• Offer assistance to the business area.

• Help clinical assistant if needed.

• Call patient if late for appointment. Help fill schedule.

• Call patients who are overdue for recall appointments.
